Nervous system regulation
How to Regulate Your Nervous System: A Practical Guide
Regulation is not about feeling calm all the time. It is the capacity to notice activation, respond to what is happening now and return toward steadiness without forcing the body. These skills can be practised wherever you live, from California and New York to Australia, Bali or Thailand.

What regulation really means
Your autonomic nervous system helps organise responses such as mobilisation, rest and recovery. Stress is not automatically harmful; it becomes harder when activation is intense, persistent or difficult to move through.
Regulation is better understood as flexibility than as a permanent state. A regulated person can still feel anger, fear or sadness while retaining enough awareness to choose a helpful next step.
A grounded regulation sequence
Try this when you feel activated but are still able to orient to the present. Keep your breathing natural and stop if discomfort increases.
- 1Feel both feet or another point of support.
- 2Look slowly around the room and name three neutral objects.
- 3Notice your breath without trying to deepen it.
- 4Allow one or two slightly longer, comfortable exhales.
- 5Choose one small action that supports the next ten minutes.
Build capacity through repetition
Short, regular practices are often more sustainable than searching for a dramatic nervous system “reset.” Sleep, movement, supportive relationships and professional care can all be part of regulation.
