Somatic Breathing Exercises to Calm the Nervous System

Somatic breathing brings attention to breath as a felt experience: movement, temperature, rhythm and contact with the body. The aim is not to perform perfectly, but to notice what supports a sense of safety and choice.

Guided outdoor somatic breathing and body-awareness practice

Start with permission, not pressure

Instructions to “take a deep breath” do not feel calming for everyone. Begin by allowing the breath to be exactly as it is. If focusing inward feels uncomfortable, keep your eyes open and orient to the room.

Breath practices should be adjustable. Smaller and easier is a valid choice.

Three gentle exercises

Use one exercise at a time for one to three minutes.

  1. 1Supported breath: feel the chair or floor while observing three natural breaths.
  2. 2Easy exhale: inhale comfortably and let the exhale become only slightly longer.
  3. 3Humming exhale: if comfortable, hum softly on the exhale and notice the vibration.

From an exercise to guided practice

A trained guide can help you vary pace and intensity instead of applying a universal technique. Somatic Breathwork at Sanando Juntos is offered online, making guided practice accessible across time zones.

For workplace groups, Corporate Wellness adapts brief regulation practices for the desk and the demands of real workdays.
